The Taiwan Academy of Periodontology was founded by Dr. Wen-Qwua Chang in 1987. It was initially named the Academy of Periodontology Republic of China and began with 17 charter members. The name was changed to the Taiwan Academy of Periodontology in 2007.

In 1987, the Academy’s first Annual Meeting was held in Taipei on December 20, with 94 active and 14 associate members. Dr. WQ Chang was nominated by Boards of Trustees and became the first President of the Academy. Subsequently, elections of the Boards take place every other year in Taipei.
